Brett Favre switches jerseys from the Packers to the Jets less than a week before EA's pigskin sim hits stores.
Jets fans, rejoice! For the first time in the franchise's history, this year's edition of Electronic Arts' Madden NFL series will feature a New York Jet as the cover athlete. The only problem? He'll be wearing a Green Bay Packers uniform.
Last night, the Packers traded Hall of Fame-bound cover athlete Brett Favre to the Jets with less than a week to go before Madden NFL 09 hits stores. An EA representative told GameSpot that Madden would arrive in stores on time, and with the previously revealed Favre-as-Packer packaging. However, the publisher will make a Favre Jets cover available to download and print out on easports.com in the coming days. A roster update switching Favre to the Jets' starting quarterback position will also go live the day before the game's August 12 release date.
The long-time Packer quarterback was named to the Madden NFL 09 cover in April. Having retired the month before, Favre was presumably immune to the Madden "cover curse," an unfortunate trend in which those chosen to front the game often follow up their photo shoots with an injury-plagued or unremarkable season.
However, the durable gunslinger had second thoughts about retirement, leaving the Packers--who had already committed to moving on with backup Aaron Rodgers as starting QB--in a pickle. ESPN reported that the Packers offered Favre at least $20 million to stay retired.

EA Sports will issue a downloadable skin with Brett in the Jets uniform that fans can download. Wonder why peeps are making their own to begin with. That would be fun!
