99 MUSTANG DEAD At 120MPH

This brings up another point... I fell asleep driving one time doing about 85 on cruise control.. and my tire got in the rocks on the left hand side.. I did a full 360 and ended up in the right lane... I did a FULL recovery. At this point.. do you think someone who just started driving could have pulled this off? I know I couldnt have... Age or maturity doesnt have anything to do with this. it has to do with experience.

Hopefully you can relate this to someone just learning to drive a very powerful machine.

I just retired last july after 44 yrs of driving Semi's in the 8 western States and 4 western Provinces of Canada.
With over a million miles driven commercially and no accidents and one minor ticket in 1971 I think i can say I know what I'm doing behind the wheel.
Yes I have done over the speed limit driving from Vancouver BC to Los Angeles Ca and at various points running thru the deserts of the USA in the middle of the night,but i have also picked my times and roads before putting 60,000 lbs at a speed above the speed limit and never never have done it if the road couldn't handle it.
the same goes for all the Mustangs and other hot cars I have owned.
As you well know,having a driver's licence does not make you a driver, imho.

That is the thought of everyone, in the form of a sentence. Years of driving and experience will bring maturity along with them... They will teach what it feels like to hit a guard rail doing 60 MPH, or slam into someone's backend at 15, or slide sideways (in the wrong direction) on an icy onramp...

All of those situations will teach you lessons about the physical limits of your cars and your skills. Eventually, regardless of how good of a driver you are, you'll know when to add that adrenaline-pumping ingredient to your daily-driving experience that we all know as SPEED.

The rest of the times, you already went through them from your 16th birthday, all the way to this very day... And you know that the fact that you're still here today is a privilige (mixed with a bit of luck), and you are to apply that experience and maturity if you wish to continue enjoying your high performance vehicles for years to come.

Let's say I think i'm mature... Okay so I'm a safer driver

Let's say I feel like taking my PERFORMANCE VEICHLE to do what is WAS BUILT TO DO and go about 120 on a perfect road at the perfect time when there was no car... or... let's say i'm on the damn salt flats... Okay so I'm a SMART driver...

Let's say a tire blows... Okay I'm a dead driver.


Maturity has a role as does age, but so do unexpected things like tires and cows.

This IS NOT my main point.. just another one to the plethora building up.

A tire blowin out at 120+ is not "freak"... you hit a shard of glass or a nail or just have a bad tire and it's all over. lol, yes it's rare but it's still on the back of my mind every time i go over 120. I've held 145 on I-10 for 7 miles behind a 200 mph s/c rebuilt LS-1 (we were goin to the strip together and he had a police jammer)... I was honestly scared shitless after 2 miles. Not @ the speed but me thinking of all the little bearings and the gears and the springs and the pins and the tires and all the little moving parts that could snap at that sustained speed... I was so glad when we it our exit.


I know it was a dumbass thing but we've all had our retarted moments. I only "top out" my GT on the Mid-Bay Bridge @ 2am or so... It's only 2 lane.. so if you see headlights.. slow down... it's 4 miles BTW

There is a point where you have to say ok this is enuff what if or this could happen. who cares drive your cars the way you want to people. if ya wreck doin 120 then ya did not luck out liek the last 10 times you have done it.

Jeez, I don't know if you'd even loose control in all cases. 275/35/18's don't have much sidewall, if you don't have the tire fly apart, you could let off the gas and coast to the side. Been there done that. I've had a left rear tire on my Expedition blow out at speed on I75 (80mph) and had no problem getting to the side of the road, don't know why all those bozos kept rolling their Explorers? I've had a 225/50/15 on an Isuzu pickup blow and kept on driving to work, the sidewall was stiff enough that it practically acted like a run flat.

More fuel for the discussion fire...I still think driving more than 80 or 90 is dumb, but I still do 120 on the onramps on occasion, or 135 passing a couple of semi's...never sustained though...

The fastest Ive ever gone was on an empty strip of desert out here in Arizona, about 104mph. Want to know how I keep my speed down.... v6. :p :'( :D
