99 MUSTANG DEAD At 120MPH

That's why driving fast is dumb all around. I've been involved in a felony traffic stop before, 155mph in a 55, no it wasn't on the highway. That was a real eye opener. seemed like fun at the time, riding the NSX's ass, flashing my hi beams to let him know he didn't bring enough with his $60K car.

While you're cuffed in the back of the cruiser, things that start to pop into your head...

What if a deer had come along?
What if my right rear tire let go?
What if someone had pulled out on this two lane road in front of us?
How long does it take to brake a car from 150+mph?
Am I going to jail?
Will I lose my job?
Will they take my car?

I haven't been over 90mph since, no desire. Spent my time and money being sure I'll smoke whatever you've got to the next redlight instead. Nothing bad came from my stop, I was still in the Navy and the DOD cop sent the thirteen local cops who showed up away. He then gave me a ticket for driving in excess of 70 in a 55. Khaki uniform saved my butt for sure.

DRIVING FAST IS STUPID, the rush is in acceleration, something most of your cars doesn't do above 70mph anyway. To all you 16-19 year olds who claim to have the mature outlook...I hope so, really. I hope you've been tested numerous times and always came out on the side of conservatism. I haven't always been so fortunate. Unless you carry an SCCA license and actually practice at speed, you'll never get "experience", and it sure as heel isn't something you get from racing on your Playstation 2...

man i had my stang for about 4 months now and i only wnet upt o 90mph. I can control it but you have to wait untill u how it handles and how much power it has. My dad made me drive my moms 94 passport and his 2002 Silverado before i got my stang and im only 17!

i still have no remorse....i dont care if you put a picture on here of his mom crying at his funeral...these kids were being idiots and obviously paid the ultimate price. The driver now has to live with the face that he murdered one of his friends.

There's an issue with your statement. Most roads are not designed to travel at those speeds. There's a lot of different variables that could easily cause a vehicle to lose control at high speeds, and most are present (specially during cold season) on most our roads.

Maturity begins by recognizing there are laws to abide by, and they're there for a reason...safety.

However, I won't be a hipocrit and act like I don't break the law on occasion. Yes, like most of US here, who happen to own performance vehicles, I do speed, and there are times when I speed well beyond the realms of what the law permits in any given stretch of public road, but at the same time I realize that each time I do, the odds keep getting closer to that 1:1 statistical ratio in which I may come face-to-face with the wrong kind of fate...

It doesn't matter when you're doing the above mentioned activities where they're not supposed to... External variables unrelated to your skill-set, vehicle's ability, or even general good luck, can alter all of that in an instance and remind you you're a mortal and your number's up.

Going back to the discussion at hand, the majority of 16 year olds who are handed a performance vehicle WILL do stupid things that will, more often than not, exceed their abilities. For that reason, the younger the person, the stronger consideration the parents should take into account before making the decision to provide them with an easy means to hurt themselves or others.

Reminds me of a father who gave his son an SS Camaro for his 16th. They lived in my parents neighboorhood in Georgia at the time. The boy left the dealership before his dad in his new car only to have his dad find him in a ditch on the way home. He was dead.

My son will be driving a tricked out Mustang when he turns 16. Rear seat delete to minimize the number of potential distractions, electronic tuning (tweecer) to prevent high speeds. I won't let go until he proves to me beyond a shadow of a doubt that he's mature enough to make the right decisions.

As far as you 16-19yr olds go, wait till you turn 21 and have something else to try and be responsible about on a routine basis. Getting some beer and hanging out at a buddies place is easy, going to a bar/club and tying one on then getting home smartly and safely is something else altogether, especially when you have a fast rear wheel powered car...

Its weird how age comes in to play in something like this. Why is it when i leave a car show i see a 40 year old guy in a 69 camaro built out the ass get sideways and take it in to a bank and kill his wife in the paper it reads " Local involved in crash " go on to read that the writer thinks it was wet roads that caused this. But when my friend (19) totaled his LS1 when a cow was in the road (He was doing 35) the paper reads " Local TEEN kills cow in street racing " I go on to read that just becuase one of our friends was behind him that night and saw him hit the cow and called the cops that it was considered street racing. This blows my mind how it is called street racing due to age. I am going to say it again. I do not care how old you are i do not care what kinda cars you have driven and i do not care if you drink or smoke. I do not care what type of cars your kids will drive. What i am saying is that this stuff does not matter. What matters is how mature the person is. You can be a a dumbass for a long time and not get a ticket or in a wreck (This is called luck.) But when you are mature enough to say no when a lil pos civic comes up beside you wanting to go from a roll now that is mature. that is something a lot of people can not do.

all valid points... but define maturity.. You will find that maturity comes with time and age... not in all cases.. but most.

This brings up another point... I fell asleep driving one time doing about 85 on cruise control.. and my tire got in the rocks on the left hand side.. I did a full 360 and ended up in the right lane... I did a FULL recovery. At this point.. do you think someone who just started driving could have pulled this off? I know I couldnt have... Age or maturity doesnt have anything to do with this. it has to do with experience.

Hopefully you can relate this to someone just learning to drive a very powerful machine.

I'll go along with that.
I just retired last july after 44 yrs of driving Semi's in the 8 western States and 4 western Provinces of Canada.
With over a million miles driven commercially and no accidents and one minor ticket in 1971 I think i can say I know what I'm doing behind the wheel.
Yes I have done over the speed limit driving from Vancouver BC to Los Angeles Ca and at various points running thru the deserts of the USA in the middle of the night,but i have also picked my times and roads before putting 60,000 lbs at a speed above the speed limit and never never have done it if the road couldn't handle it.
the same goes for all the Mustangs and other hot cars I have owned.
As you well know,having a driver's licence does not make you a driver, imho.

That is the thought of everyone, in the form of a sentence. Years of driving and experience will bring maturity along with them... They will teach what it feels like to hit a guard rail doing 60 MPH, or slam into someone's backend at 15, or slide sideways (in the wrong direction) on an icy onramp...

All of those situations will teach you lessons about the physical limits of your cars and your skills. Eventually, regardless of how good of a driver you are, you'll know when to add that adrenaline-pumping ingredient to your daily-driving experience that we all know as SPEED.

The rest of the times, you already went through them from your 16th birthday, all the way to this very day... And you know that the fact that you're still here today is a privilige (mixed with a bit of luck), and you are to apply that experience and maturity if you wish to continue enjoying your high performance vehicles for years to come.

A tire blowin out at 120+ is not "freak"... you hit a shard of glass or a nail or just have a bad tire and it's all over. lol, yes it's rare but it's still on the back of my mind every time i go over 120. I've held 145 on I-10 for 7 miles behind a 200 mph s/c rebuilt LS-1 (we were goin to the strip together and he had a police jammer)... I was honestly scared shitless after 2 miles. Not @ the speed but me thinking of all the little bearings and the gears and the springs and the pins and the tires and all the little moving parts that could snap at that sustained speed... I was so glad when we it our exit.


I know it was a dumbass thing but we've all had our retarted moments. I only "top out" my GT on the Mid-Bay Bridge @ 2am or so... It's only 2 lane.. so if you see headlights.. slow down... it's 4 miles BTW

hmmm i have to say that if you are doing 120 and your tires blows you are dead or a very lucky man if not, if you are doind 70 and a tire blows you are dead. There is a point where you have to say ok this is enuff what if or this could happen. who cares drive your cars the way you want to people. if ya wreck doin 120 then ya did not luck out liek the last 10 times you have done it.
