sputtering issues
so my mustang has been having issues with the engine sputtering under moderate to heavy acceleration, i have changed out the coil packs, the spark plugs and put injector cleaner in the car. each thing i do helps the car out a little but it still wont completely go away. it only does it for about 2 seconds after i give it gas then it stops as if nothing is wrong at all. any ideas?
Thanks,
Brannon

Have someone check the Throttle Position Sensor. If it is wearing out it can cause the engine to sputter as well. Has your idle been consistent once your engine warms up or does it fluctuate when stopping? Can't remember if your stang is a stick or automatic. Much more noticeable when it's a stick.

it is an automatic, yes the car sputters at an idle as well as during acceleration. i also changd the o rings on my injectors and put a new fuel filter in it.
-
Could very well be the Throttle Position Sensor. I went through the same thing.
-
is that the same symptoms that yours had exacltly?
-
Sounds like the exact thing based on your description. I could never understand why the surging idle and hesitation during acceleration would not throw a code. Hell I thought it was about to give up the ghost. The idiot light never even flickered. I did not change out as many parts as you've noted but by elinimation it ended up being the TBS.

A dirty MAF sensor will do that too. If it's dirty it can't sense the air flow thus the computer can't regulate the fuel flow right.
-
well i took i asked some a guy at the shop i always take it to and he said one of the coils were bad, i replaced it again and still nothing. i will check into these things as well, but the check engine light is not if. does that make a difference with both of these problems being electrical
-
neither of these were the problem... i saw online that a bad fuel pump might be my issues or the relay for it.. but no body knows where the relay is on any site i have looked at.. does any one here know? and do you think that might be the poblem?
-
Just another thought but when was the last time the fuel filter was changed? Could be starving for gas.
-
i changed out the fuel filter last week, and it made no difference.
-
might be a simple thing to try but i hd the same issue and changed everything including the position sensor and guess what. it was a weak cell in my battery that was causing the issues with the way it was running. never would have believed it if it didnt happen to me. as you stated it gets worse the first few seconds u give it gas. if you have another car or a friend try swapping your battery out with theres and go run it and see what happens.
-
thanks for the reply, it turned out that even though i had new coil packs on there one of them was defective.
-
Cool. Those seem to be a issue on the mods. From what I understand. I know several guys that have swapped them out for chevy LS coils. Im not sure whats involved, but their supposed to be better.
-
have you done any work to the car recently? hows your timing? and consider a bad tank of gas can give you issues also....sounds stupid but shitty gas do bad things
-
missed your post about the bad coil packs- glad you found it

yeah the car runs great now, thanks for everyones help.
