my car runs 180 then when I slow down some times it will go to 200, turn AC on it jumps to 210. I have a 331 from dss top and bottom with victor jr heads on 70 degree days no problem 80 ish slight worries my factory fan wires and fan motor burned out. I now have a black magic fan pulling air, i have a 160 thermostat should i go up to a 180? Oh yeah at what temp does aluminum heads crack. :nailbite:

Mine was doing that and it turned out that my fan clutch was bad. I switched the entire fan out with a flex fan and now my gauge dont go past the N on the Normal. Most times at highway speed it stays right on the line before the N. This probably is not an option for nyou since you have the electric fan set up but it might be better than cracking a head. I actually need to switch back to a 180 thermastat to bring the heat up a lil. I have a 165 in there now. I also added water wetter and it helped out alot. It is not unusual to have the heat rise when the A/C is on. I hope this helps. As for heat temp before cracking a head I am not sure but I would not press my luck with it. I would say anything over the normal range on the gauge could crack the head or blow a gasket.

160 to 170 normally. In the 120 degree Vegas heat I run about 200, hotter with the AC runnin' in the heat. Whew!

Been 90+ degrees this week. Should be in the 70's this weekend before jumping intot he 100's.

I run 190-200 in the summer. You have to get pretty hot to crack a head but at 250 I would be shutting it off. Put the 180 back in, it will keep your engine at optimal temp. I also have an aluminium radiator the holds twice the coolant of the stock one and that helps a lot. You can also get a bigger fan if it still worries you. Dodge Intrepid stock fan is a dual and flows a lot of air, about 100 bucks on ebay.

I run at 180, and like boss91gt, I have a larger radiator, if anything my temp does not go over 190, when at idle. I also use a flex fan which pulls all kinds of air.

Thanks, everyone has been most helpful, I have a flex fan it is awesome I did some checking and found out we put the temp control for the fan in the wrong side of the radiator, I'll also order the bigger radiator cause mine is atleast 10 years old and switch thermostats. hopefully i'll be ripping it up again and not waiting till night LOL

FWIW, I never run over 180 in 100 degree weather, I obviously have a 180 stat, I also run a CSI electric WP, aluminum radiator, and electric fan. I also have 5 small holes cut out in the front bumper for more air to come in and to prevent the bumper from caving in at high speeds ( bumper support removed) Good to hear you found the problem though, I've seen aluminum heads go to 220 before with no problems.

My car has run cooler since I put in a 160 stat. My electric fan and larger aluminum radiator helps with the cooling as well.

They have to get really hot to crack. The problem is they warp. Edelbrocks are some of the stronger ones though.

what temp is right in the middle? at highway speeds after 1+ hours I manage to hold 1/2 way up on the stock gauge with a 180 thermostat. I noticed mine rides hotter the higher the rpms (so...highway speed for me is 75-80 at about 2800-2900 rpm with my bigger gears)

The above condition I hope to improve to one notch below halfway by flushing my coolant again due to earlier last year I completely contaminated my coolant with rust! yes...it was completely brown! I flushed it once...but perhaps I still have crap in there.
also; i have a deflector that keeps flying off...which without the deflector I overheat to nearly redline and have to pull over in 20 mins of highway driving.

-but this is highway driving conditions...on the street never even get past 1/4 on the stock gauge and the deflector or no dedlector doesn't matter for street driving.

I have stock radiator and clutch fan.

I check my gauge pics, halfway is 200- so highway 200 - street 165

when I have problems and hit 235 I start to watch out
if I get to 250 I stare at the gauge, one pinch over that I pull over

btw; stock heads
