View Full Version : A Vortech on a Stock Block?

I was wondering, could I run a vortech supercharger at a low PSI on a stock block (factory internals, nothing forged) without worrying about detonation? I drive the car daily but I kinda want a little more kick. I have heard that I could run a supercharger at 6-7psi for daily driving and not even worry about engine wear. Can someone give me a few bits of wisdom on this subject?

EDIT: O yea would switching to a Mac H-Pipe w/convertors make much of a difference from my stock mid pipe. Sound and performance wise.

i would guess if you have 6-8 psi the stock block wouldnt really be a problem.

I'm not planning on making a 500rwhp super car, I would just like maybe a 300rwhp daily driver that on weekends I can smoke a few people at the drag strip. Nothing huge. I also don't drive with a really heavy foot.

i had a vortech s-trim pushing 16psi on my daily driver stock 5.0 block. must use 93 octane. any less and you will detonate.

well like I said I wouldn't be pushing 16psi on my car, probably only 6-7psi

then you shouldn't have a problem.

Why not just add the bolt on goodies to get the 300 hp. Cost less than the blower.

Got a list? lol, I have been adding the numbers, it cost more than $3600 with bolt-ons. A vortech S-trim costs $3100. Unless you know a better way. :hmmm:

For your body, I don't know the numbers, but on a stock fox body, utilizing the TFS Stage 1 top end kit($2100) resulted in about 270 at the rear wheels. Run a CAI, bump the throttle body a bit and feed a bit more fuel and get a good tune, and you should be over 300hp.
I would think that you could do it for $3100

Im running a blower with 6psi with no problems on stock internals. I will push 9psi with an intercooler, Ill let ya know how that goes.

I have to agree with junior and crimson here. Get the bolt ons. You can find used intakes and stuff all day long, and knock alot of that price down. You just have to be a little patient and shop around.I got my heads, cam, intake, rocker arms, pushrods, and valve covers for a grand off ebay. They had less than 2000 miles on them, and looked and worked as good as new. Then got a used performer rpm intake. I even ran that combo with the stock mass air and injectors for a while, and I could run side by side with a '04 vette. That was from about 60 to 120 mph or so.

Your tune is the main thing that will prevent any problems. Currently Im running 10lbs of boost on my stock block and when I had my car dynoed last year, I put down 354rwhp/360rwtq...My tuner(Tim Barth @ Modular Powerhouse) told me how my timing will be reduced when the weather becomes really hot to reduce any chances of detonation. Good luck and as long as you choose a good shop to tune your blower, you will be perfectly fine.

jsut dont run any more than 10 psi and get a good tune and run 93 and youll ne ver have a problem with it. and also dont live on the rev limiter

your gonna have a hard time malking 300 horsepower n/a on that non-opi engine. its possible but would be a helluva lot easier with a s/c or some n20. i have a procharger for sale right now for a great price.

I pump in 10psi all day long on my stock block. I even have stock heads/cam on it. The biggest thing is make sure you have enough fuel. I have plenty, 30# injectors, twin 255 lph pumps, and an adjustable regulator set at about 44psi (under boost=no vaccum) and im at about 12 degrees advanced on the timeing.
ITs also a daily driver. just have to run 93 Octane. thats all. also, it has 107000miles on it. all original internals.
I make 380 RWHP and 385 TQ.

I am running 9 psi with a KB intercooled kit, no problems, stock injectors and fuel pump and still running way rich. Actually got to get it tuned back a bit. You should have no problem with 6 psi.
