I was having my clutch redone and found out that FORD dose some funny things in the motors. When you look into changing your clutch I would recommend that you get it apart befor you order a new flywheel.

I was about to install an Aluminum 6-bolt GT fly wheel. Got it all apart to discover that I have a 8-bolt cobra crank in my 2V motor.
Needless to say a 6-bolt flywheel will not mount to an 8.

6-bolt is what is supposed to be in there,But FORD will change things with out mentioning it to anyone.

This is just an FYI....

Yes more changes are comming to the Roush. :nya:

The cobra is a stronger fordged crank.

This is a bonus for me but lucky the shop had another cobra flywheel or we would have been USC.

Look into it some more, I think the 6 bolt vesrsus 8 bolt crank was related to the engine manufacturing location. Romeo vs. ? I can't remember. It's not a Cobra crank "by mistake" I'll promise you that much.

Here you go,

Seems the engines manufactured at the Windsor plant after '96 may have had either 6 or 8 bolt cranks.

All 2000's are Winsors and have 8 bolt cranks.

I dont think ford screwed up. The reason is that the Romeo blocks have a 6 bolt crank and the Winsor blocks have a 8 bolt crank. That i beleave is the case. If you look and your vin number i beleave the 8th spot will tell you what block yours is. The letter means somethining but i for got.
I think W = winsor X = romeo. not sure so look into it

My understanding is this: ( please correct any inaccuracies)

99-04 Mustang GT's and Bullitts have an 8 bolt cast crank
All 96-04 Cobras have an 8 bolt Forged crank
All 5 speed Mach 1's have an 8 bolt forged crank
All Mach 1 A/T cars have a 6 bolt cast crank.
Aviator: 6 bolt cast crank
5.4 32V motors have an 8 bolt forged crank.
Mark 8: I have no idea
Continental: see above

No

99-04 GTs
windsor = 8 bolt cast
romeo = 6 bolt cast

most but not all 99-00 had windsors
most but not all 01-04 had romeos

my 02 had a romeo with a 6 bolt

Cobras had forged 8 bolts

Was it the factory installed motor in the GT or maybe it was swapped?
According to Ford, all the GT's had 8 bolt.
I have seen stranger things from Ford though.

I bought it new. Not sure who at Ford gave you the info, but this info is on lots of the modular forums. Crank really depends on the engine factory, Romeo or Windsor

I am by no means an expert..... but I've had a bunch of these apart at our engine shop.

I would definately agree about strange things from Ford. I know there are GT's out there with the 3:55 rear axels from the Mach1's

I've run into this before as well . I was told its the difference in where the engine was made .

Back from the past.

Yes, all Windsor 4.6L engines (Mainly 99-mid 01 Mustangs) use an 8 bolt cast crank
Romeo 4.6L Engines ( Mainly 96-98 and mid 01-04) use a 6 bolt cast crank

All cobras have a forged 8 bolt crank
5spd Marauders have a Forged 8 bolt crank, Auto Marauders have a cast 6 bolt
