Next Disussin topic....

Gear Ratios.

What do you have...?

why did you get that ratio..?

Are you happy with what you chose,And if not what would you want to change to?

I changed to FRPP 3.55's . I went with that on a suggestion after taking with the installer. He races open track and said that I would like the feel of 3.55 over 3.73's. The 73's make you have to shift to soon for track racing and if I was to continue on getting blown. I would like them more. His deal with that was if I did not like them then he would change them and install the 73's.

I am loving the gears...perfect for blown app. Take off's are tight and top end dose not float away like the 27's felt like.

3.55's in my 89. I chose this gear, because I still plan on doing some highway driving. All I have to do is smash the pedal, in 1st or 2nd gear, and the ass end comes completely loose.

4.10s...was gonna go with 3.73 since its my daily driver, but if i was getting a gear might as well get the right gear. i shouldve gotten 4.30s...these gears are way too much fun

4.30's because I had planned on staying N/A for a while. Now I am running n20 and i have to run a taller tire in the rear to compensate. When the rear goes I will probably run a 4.10 with a spool with FI

What type of rpm's do ya run at 60, and 80 MPH? How heavy is your car?

I have no idea what the car weighs. Its a pig though. I turn about 2150 at 60 and about 2850 at 80

Not Bad. Just a little more RPM's than I run with 3.55's.

yeah too many people fear the gear, and fuel economy...but why worry about fuel economy in a mustang? running a medium gear like 3.55s and 3.73s will always leave you wondering and itch for more. its always good to start with a 4.10 gear, see how it suits you and your driving style, and compensate with a taller tire.

I gotta disagree with you guys, I guess that's why it's a discussion. Stock cars need the gear to compensate for lack of power. It makes the underpowered more fun to drive. I had 3.73's in my 280rwhp (on the dyno in 97.5F Florida (humid) shop air). Wheelspin in first gear was almost too much to bear. It was definitely hard to control at best. Powershifting second kept on boiling tires. None of which contributes to "quick".

Saleen S351's were equipped with 3.27's over 3.55's (I think, or it was 3.55's instead of 3.73's, pretty sure it was 3.27's though) It made the car turn better numbers in the 1/4. You reach a point where you have to modulate the gas to stay hooked up on street tires. IMO, you'd be better off with a setup that allows you to got WOT and be on the edge of loosing traction.

With my 347 and 3.27's, I can drop the hammer and blow off the tires, or I can smoothly (and quickly) go to WOT with minimal spin. The pull in second and third is incredible. So in summary, more balls=less gear required.

Race cars have to consider tire height and rpm through the traps for peak performance in the 1/4, not a goal for street driven cars.

very nice topic. I got some 4.10s layign around that i need to get put in but still debating on it. that or the 3.73's i guess what it comes down to is what you have in your car is what you like.

I'd put 4.10's in a high revving Cobra unless it has a power adder.
