Just about any type of photo editing software will work. It's all a matter of learning to use it correctly. Whatever you chose purchase an aftermarket book, start at page one and go through the book. You can't just pick up some software and start turning out work - you have to learn it. Talk with some of your friends see what they use, what might be easier to learn and start with that.

Software Types
1. Photoshop 7.0 ($400)
2. Photoshop CS1 & 2 ($600 to 1200)
3. Photopaint (About $70)
4. PhotoImpact 10 ($100 or less: comes with animation creator, special effects, 3D text, Button creator, java creator, etc.) This is what I use most of the time despite having the other software listed above.
5. Kai's photosoap
6. Corel Draw
7. Adobe Photo Elements (a heavily reduced version of Photoshop. About $35 or so.)

There are quite a few cut down versions of image editing software on the market in the $40 price range. Try some of that out before dumping the cash. As much as people want to do it, many don't like doing it.

You also need to start collecting fonts for the computer. You don't have to put them all in the fontz area of windows, but it's nice to have them. I currently have about 10,000 or so fonts but only around 900 on my computer. Some are variants of the same fonts and the software will allow you to make changes to the ones you have as well.

Thanks to both of you. I will try something and let you know how far I have gotten. My 18 year old son just told me he used Adobe photoshop in school. He said if I had 7.0 now he could show me how to use it. They had to make simular products for class assignments. Little pricey though, but you get what you pay for.

Thanks again.

If you don't have it on hand, save the money and purchase something cheaper. Imagine spending that kind of money and deciding not to do it. Get the book and learn that way. Someone showing you still won't give you all the steps you need. You'll be missing stuff. There are no short cuts to doing things the right way. Short cuts generally have... dead ends.
