View Full Version : Yep, I chopped the top off!

She was originally a '66 289 Mustang Coupe, but now that I carved the top off and made a few mods, she's a '66 408 Mustang Coupe-Vertible. I can bolt the original top back on, or a soft top when it rains.

It turned out good, but I do want to go back and redo the hard top mounting setup. Currently it takes 5 mins to put the hard top on since I have to snug some bolts. I plan to use dowel pins and make the front slide into a slot on each side, then have the back drop onto guide pins and the latch down. When I built it, I didn't have a cage and was worried about the top coming off and hitting me in a rollover. Now that I've thunk it through, there's like NO way the top will come straight up - rather - it would take side forces, which two 1/2" guidepins the correct length would handle just fine. That way I can get rid of needing BOLTS to hold it down. :D
