i'm building a 302 for my 87 lx, the motor is out of an 89 gt, and i plan to leave the bottom end stock for now because its in good condition. The engine will be carbureted, with a 600cfm holley single pumper and an edelbrock performer intake manifold. i will be running long tube headers with 1&5/8" primaries and 3" collectors. I am running the stock heads with a mild port job and edelbrock valve springs and i am also running a 5 speed. My question is, should i go with a B303 or an E303 motorsports cam. i want to stay under .500 lift and maintain decent drivability. i dont plan to turn more than 6000 rpms and i want the car to still have decent take off at low rpms. so B303 or E303?, other suggestions are also welcome, thanks!

Stay away from the E303 in a carbed application. My old man had a 302 Ranger with just about the EXACT same specs as the build you're planning and that stupid thing couldn't idle worth a squat. Lean surges plagued him the whole time. I would not use an EFI cam in a carbed setup. Either cam is a decent choice, and you'll hear this from everyone I'm sure, there are MUCH better cam choices out there. The alphabet FMS cams were the early ones on the scene, they have been surpassed by much better grinds.

Actually the E303 Cam may be what you are looking for. According to my Ford book the E303 has "good idle quality; Excellent low and mid RPM Range. Power thru 6000 rpm. Emissions legal with 5 speed transmission. (E.O. #D-225-16). Works good with automatic transmissions. Great for Superchargers.) ON EFT Engines you must have mass air.

The F303 : Slightly rougher idle than E303. More mid-range and top-end power than the E303. Great for Superchargers. 5 speed manual tranmission recommended.

It depends on what you want to do with the cam. If it's stop light to stop light and around town the E303 would be great. The F303 would be great if you have a 5speed and take it to the track. It is not recommended to use on an automatic.

Before you purchase anything for the engine decide what you are working towards and go that direction. If you want the Holley Manifold and intake go with the holley cam. If you're going to stick with the ford stuff like a GT40 or Cobra intake and manifold then use the ford cams. You'll get the most from youe car by using the same manufacturer for these upgrades. If you mix a ford cam and Holley intake and manifold you might not be getting the most out of either one. It is recommended that you stick with the same.

A mechanic in the latest issue of Modified Mustangs states the same thing. They don't even recommend purchasing a car that the previous owner has mixed and match engine parts.

An E cam is a poor choice for a carb setup.

thanks for the info noslo5.0, did your old man ever find a cam that would suit his needs with the carb setup in the ranger? and is there any cam you would recommend?, any info is appreciated.

He sold the truck with the E cam still in there, still lean surging away...

I'd just call Comp and ask for an off the shelf grind that suits your particular setup. Maybe search the Corral for information also. There is a wealth of tech over there, lots of guys running carbs too.
