This is the beginning of a long thread...

I'll post here to let everyone know when I got progress updates on the 5.0 swap. :thumpupn:

Just for those who don't know yet:
I have a 93 2.3 which I've been restoring and customizing for 2 years. Now that I've gotten to a certain point...it's getting time to swap in the 5.0 and finalize this 2.3LX to 5.0GT dream project. (not that it'll EVER be done!)
I'll be doing this with my Dad over this winter (Jan-?)

October 8, 2005: Current Progess:

Picture of the flexplate, and the lovely AOD. You can also see the rusted oil pan from the blown 93 motor. It's the very reason this became a donor car for all the parts except the motor.

The exhaust & rearend is not half bad!

THE MOTOR:
-The motor has 85k mi and is comming from the 87 I looked at previously.
-I'VE HEARD THIS MOTOR RUN, IT REVS STRONG WITH NO SKIPPING, PINGING OR KNOCKING! :w00t: :woohoo:

ok, need help/tips for underhood restoration...that's cheap, like paint!
What can I paint? And what kind of paint is recommended.
What shouldn't I paint?

1.) Alternator? (my garage shot my 2.3 alternator with black paint...seems ok; Can I just spray paint my 5.0 alternator?
2.) I will need to paint the intake manifold...what kind of paint should I use? Do I need to be careful not to paint the inside or anything like that?
3.) Brackets: what kind of paint is recommended?
4.) Radiator hose...I hope to have money to replace at least the upper..incase I don't Can I paint them with a high temp paint or something?

I also need help with color choice:
1.) Black, Silver/chrome, and a few Electric Current Red Accents
2.) Black, Silver/chrome, and purple accents? and red?
3.) Black, Silver/chrome, and some other accent color??
4.) What color should my intake manifold be? Electric Current Red? Or Silver?
5.) What color should my calipers and drums be? Red, Silver? or some other color?

You can paint the alternator, but just the housing. Most people have them taken apart, paint the housing, then put back together. You really don't need to get paint on the brushes.

As far as the intake I just used regulalr Rustolem on mine, but I put a self-etching primer on it first the let that flash off then sprayed the color then put 2 coats of a high temp made by Duplicolor...I got it all at Advanced Auto except for the primer which I got at a automotive paint store. Just mask up all the opening in the intake, and you'll be fine.

A good qualtiy spray bomb will work fine on the brackets. If they're bare metal though you may want to use the primer on them too.

Paint won't stay on the radiator hoses. They're so inexpensive it's not worth the effort or risk of trying to salvage the old ones.

One last thing make sure you clean, and prep everything you paint extremely well. The final wipe down before paint should be done with some time of an automotive grade pre cleaner or wax and grease remover.

Can't wait to see it all done Nicole. I know you'll be glad when it's done.
I say chrome/polish everything you can and paint the rest the same as the car (Electric Current Red). Maybe a few items can be painted black or silver for a bit of contrast. I'll be waiting for more pics to come! Good Luck!

Do I need to buy a new flexplate? The flexplate has some surface rust that doesn't look to severe, and the teeth look very good....

is it worth replacing with this PA Racing Flexplate?
http://www.gotstang.com/photodisplay.php?file=4520

I'm trying to squeeze some things out the swap budget and postpone for later....but maybe it's worth upgrading during the swap?

As long as the teeth are good, and there are no cracks around where it bolts to the crank or where the torque converter bolts up the one you have is fine. Unless you plan on making some serious power in the near future, if thats the case then you may wanna upgrade.

thanks for the tip! I'll need to inspect it more later, but from what I could see, it looked pretty solid. Define "serious horse power" ...like how much we talking before an upgrade would be recommended?

I would paint the Intake to match the color of the car. Silver is ehhh, and a chrome job on it is not cheap at all. Some places, at least here in Vegas have a month or two waiting list on material.

The brakes and drum are generally done in Red. I am planning to do mine black when I get the new rims for the car. Any other color will tend to show dirt and grime as the car is used. Then you'll be taking off the rims everytime you want to detail the car. Red will make them stand out though. Not much reason to make the rear drums stand out, when most cars now have disc all the way around.

Are you planning to keep the stock manifold plate? The one that says 5.0 on it? They are so ugly. I found a bunch at the junkyard that just say 5.0 EFI on it. I have mine painted flat black and will paint the letters white, when I get around to it. Looks better than the stock one that most have.

Good luck with the conversion. Can't wait to see it.

Nicoleb3x3

hey, thanks.
Yeah, I'll likely use the same manifold for at least a little while..trying to keep initial costs low.

An 87 motor?? No mass air?

Nicoleb3x3
10-15-2005, 10:38 PM
the donor is a sweet 79k mi 93 with a blown engine (being removed), and I'm getting the engine from the 87 (around 85k mi). (he's placing the 87 engine inside the engine bay for transit to my house)
so; the 93 has the mass air among other things (like a compatible engine wiring harness)

The engine from the 87 to 93 is basically the same thing (very minor changes) and will replace the 93 engine no prob.

Part of my mass air system and portion of the exhaust

ok, no updates lately.
It's a bit of a wait until Winter is offically kicked in.

Talked with my dad about garage space, it looks like maybe late into January we may get started. (it depends on space in the garage and his schedule to free up the bay)

I don't want to take apart the donor car too soon, and have too many loose parts.

Hey J, you going to help me with this swap when you come out here? :nya:

UPDATE:
Waiting for garage space from my Dad...should be sometime this month- I hope :)

I'm getting Joey's stock intake (blown93feature) which is in better condition.
I'll be polishing it with Charlie's (onebad95) awesome polish -I'll post pics when that's done.

Trying to debate getting headers and exhaust while I got the car apart....good ol Visa can help me save time getting the headers done now. -it would suck putting in headers next year...when it's so easy to do it durring this swap :)

http://www.gotstang.com/photodisplay.php?useruid=1408&showimage=209
My dad checks out the donor and the work ahead of us

I noticed the gas tank has been taken off the donor....so I guess I'll be needing a new fuel pump. Any tips on this? What I should buy, and I assume I can use the tank from the 4 banger???

I also realized the spindles on the 4 vs 8 is different...does anyone know if I need to swap the spindles over?? or is it possible to find good brakes for a 4 banger mustang? what else is a concern here? I didn't plan on changing anything in the front suspension..I heard the kmember from the 4 would work...and again, I'm not sure about the spindles and other parts I may need to swap over?

Its been a while since I did this swap on my 88 LX. Let me see if i can remember a few things.

The rear your gonna want to swap. get rid of the 7.5 for the 8.8 and while its out you might want to concider the disc brake conversion.
These should be 5 lug now.

You can use Front rotors from a 83-88 4cyl. Ranger direct swap to give you the 5 lug up front. ( if the rear is shot in the donor car , you can use axles from 83-92 ranger/bronco II w/7.5 for a 5 lug pattern.

The engine tranny and driveshoft direct swap, you need to use the GT Crossmember with the double hump for the exhaust.

You may want to concider the suspension , since everything is already going to be out , if i remember correctly there is a difference in the spring rates do the the weight of the engine. sway bar is a different size.

Since you have a donor GT, my suggestion is to use as much/many parts off that car as you can.

I took my lx to a frame shop first to have it checked ( because of a acciedent ) , then installed subfame connectors, remember with the new motor your going to be making more torque

Basically with any project , take your time , do it right the first time even if this means it takes a little longer and more money, you will be happer in the end rather then kicking yourself saying why didnt i do this then.

Nicoleb3x3
02-12-2006, 01:58 PM
thx
I am taking the 8.8 rear fron the donor, and keeping the 4 lug

I already have upgrade all the suspension to 5.0 srpings and rear shocks; but the front struts are 2.3 struts because of the spindle size. I even have subframe connectors; but still need to get those welded on.

I think I'm going to buy some better rotors for the 2.3 application and upgrade the breaks, and paint the calipars; hopefully should be fine (this way I can keep the KYB struts I have in the front...the ony 2.3 suspension part I got stuck with.

I'm planning to swap the spindles, struts and the brakes from the 5.0, hopefully it goes well.
it sucks cause I'll have to put the 2.3 spindles in the donor car to make it possible to roll it onto the trailer for delivery to the junkyard.

...so...the day the donor goes to the junkyard..we'll have to do all of this on the same day:
1. Roll the donor out of the garage and take out the rearend, spindles and brake parts
2. Get the 2.3 down to the garage & park it into the bay and remove the rearend and spindles and other brake parts
3. Take the 2.3 parts and rearend and install them on the donor
4. roll the donor on up on the trailer and bring to the junk yard

Does anyone know if the kmember needs to be swapped too???

Being "heavy" stuff, I give today's credit to my Dad. He pretty much did it all by himself. (honestly, I didn't want to get in the way!!!!)

Well, check out my blog's for the problem solving of the bolts...
finally got that solved

and then broke another bolt in the lower intake...

so; the motor assembly done, except we need to do the lower intake and upper intake later. (I can also install the new intake plate which CobraSpence got for me!! THANK YOU!!) for now the engine is pushed aside.

http://www.gotstang.com/0505/Nicoleb3x3/4-13-06%20002.jpg

The 2.3 is going to the garage in the next few days.

I would say it's about halfway done!

From the day the 5.0 was lifted from the donor car on 3/6, it took about a month to get this far.
So; if all goes well then I expect to be done by the second week of May.
From there I'll need the stang brought to a tranny shop for a TV cable adjustment,

so mid May and I hope to drive her again.

Ok, NEED HELP!!!

I realized today when looking at my 2.3 engine harness that is i does not have one of the dash-side plugs that the 5.0 harness has.... It's a brown plug w/ 6 wires I beleive, in the 5.0 donor it plugs in somewhere above the computer. My 2.3 does not have a place for this plug to go...

.... I assume it needs to be re-wired somwhere??

Swap Update - Is Tuesday the day? (http://www.gotstang.com/blogs.php?blogid=391) No work on the stang Monday...J had an episode
he was in extreme pain (stomach) and couldn't even drive! So he pulled over and laid down in the grass...and couldn't even last long enough for me to get there...so he took an ambulance to the hospital near his work and I met up with him there. Turns out it was a kidney stone..and luckily he's ok now!!! kinda funny...we went to get his car and he lost his keys...and they were in the grass by his stang the whole time! Imagine if somone found those keys! omg!

SO ON WITH THE UPDATE!
The tranny/speed shop has my stang scheduled for Monday...they should finish it that day
So; I have through the weekend to finish up my end. Good thing cause I'm getting physically and mentally exhausted!!! Sooo many little things to do, and I get frustrated when I get to a point where I need to ask for help.

Like today I went to install my new flow tech unequal headers...easy right?
besides it was getting dark, I think a few bolts were not 100% straight, and I couldn't see good...and...whatever I'm girl! so enough, I'm waiting for J's help with the headers, they're heavy when leaning over the car! (btw; the BBK equals from Charlie don't fit...they're from 94/95 and I think they're design is a bit bigger than the 87/93 era...if anyone needs some and they have a 94 or 95 302 let me or onebad95 know!)

http://www.gotstang.com/0505/Nicoleb3x3/6-10-06%20019.jpg

1. PROBLEM 1 - No power to the starter..
resolution = I removed something under the driver's column that turned out to be from an old remote start system...I need it to run the car now..so I had it in the trunk and plugged it back in.

2. PROBLEM 2 - Fuel Pump not running..
resoltuion = I predicted this problem (common with 4cyl swaps)
all I had to do is splice to wires together under the dash near the computer
click here for more details: http://forums.stangnet.com/showthread.php?t=639587 (http://forums.stangnet.com/showthread.php?t=639587)

3. PROBLEM 3 - Now that we have fuel...I got to crank it again...
..and again..
..and again..
Until we hear air escaping from the fuel rail...and then some fuel was comming out at one of the injectors.
The fuel rail had a slight bend in it...and I didn't have the correct screws holding the rail down so it was lifting under the pressure.

CONCLUSION - I picked up a new fuel rail and bolts today from Menards (mustang heaven!)
with all the parts ready to go, we're going back to the shop Monday after work -Eric from Lahrs's Transmission offered to help out!!!

so; it was great to know the wiring is good and nothing caught fire!
She wants to come to life!

-edit conclusion...wiring for the starter was good...but I found that I accidently grounded a constant power wire...and it was causing no spark for 2 days....

Swap Update - IT'S ALIVE!!! A 302 IS BORN!! (http://www.gotstang.com/blogs.php?blogid=447)

http://www.gotstang.com/0505/Nicoleb3x3/June2005.jpg

The 4 cyl is offically gone forever, and a 302 is born!

Here's a video on the first start! Click Here:
http://WWW.gotstang.com/gs_files/302_IS_BORN.MOV (http://www.gotstang.com/gs_files/302_IS_BORN.MOV)

For those following the "no start" issues...J an I traced the problem to no power to the injectors, then back to no power to the eec relay, to no power at the fusable link...to no power...um to a ground? DUH, there was a ground that wasn't a ground at all, it belonged on the starter relay for a constant power!

yay! problem solved!

We have to still get the coolant bleeded of air, but all is good! idle is awesome..perfect!

Sweet! Congrats on completing the transformation and getting the tranny rebuilt. Maybe now it's just concentrating on having some fun with the car.
