The other day the needle to my tachometer jumps up to 4 grand when I start the car. When I turn the key to the on position it is at 500 rpm, the jumps to 4000 rpm. It only moves to 5000 rpm when I really accelerate, other than that it stays at 4. All other gauges are working properly. Any suggestions on what went bad.

take it to the dealership....something is either wrong with the needle or the gauge itself has gone bad

You all are alot of help, I was trying to find out if there is some kind of sensor that might have gone bad and where it might be. Not taking it to the dealership, I haven't won the lottery yet, plus since it's over ten years old they probably don't carry the parts.

I have a problem similar to that, when I am in Park, I'll rev my engine up to about 2000-2500 rpms and then it will just stay there like i'm holdin the gas, and then it goes back down, I think its the pedal because if I pull the throttle from the engine, it goes up and comes right back down.

The tach is driven by a signal from the TFI module. If the car has stalling problems, buy a new one.
Have you done a whiteface gauge swap? Sometimes the needle can get hung up on the face. It's prevalent if the needle was pressed on too far.
Blackstallion, I promise that your problem is not related to your pedal.

Today I swapped the stock coil back on, since I just changed it with a Jeg's performance coil. The tach went back down to normal when I tried to start it with the coil disconnected. It went back to 4000 with the stock coil on. I have had some problems with rough idle and initial stalling during start up, so I think I'll get a new TFI module and see what happens. Thanks for the suggestion NoSlo5.0.

It's not cheap. I think some stores have the ability to test them for you. Might save you some cash. If yours is the original, I'd go ahead and get one just because it's past time to fail anyway.

It's not the TFI module, I got one and installed it. Car ran worse with the new one and it didn't fix the problem.

It's fixed, just bought a gauge cluster from the local Mustang salvage yard and swapped out the tachs. Works now.
