I found a new reason to run a 7qt pan today. It compensates for careless oil and filter changes...

I was whooping on the car today on an on-ramp when a cloud of smoke erupted from behind the car, I mean contrail looking, zero visibility stuff. I shut the car down and pulled it over by the end of the ramp. I couldn't see any block damage or seals or anything wrong. There was oil EVERYWHERE. So I called my old man to swing by and pick me up, in the meantime rebuild ideas were all through my head. He shows up and says it looks like an oil filter gasket may have let go. Off to Walmart for 6 quarts and a filter...We do an oil change right there on the on ramp, an lo and behold, the last time I changed the filter, the gasket stuck to the block. I never noticed. Two gaskets are not better than one. Long story short, we completed the oil change, drove to his house and gave her a good degreasing pressure wash.

This success (or near tragic stupidity, either way) story made possible by having the reserve of 6 quarts to pump out a failed gasket...

Wow thank god. That shit scares me. Your car should automatically shutoff if it loses oil pressure.

Best part of a big ass oil pan, I never lost oil pressure. No harm except for oil film baked onto my ceramic coated (now oil coated) longtubes.

Always make sure that the old gasket comes off, I have heard of this happening 20 years ago and always check to see that I have the old gasket before I put the new filter on.

My dad promptly called me a dumbass when I showed him. There have been dealerships that have had to purchase new engines as a result of such a screwup.

All is well that ends well, and I'll never forget to check for that again. Wonder what other seemingly little life lessons are still out there? I'm getting tired of uncovering new and inventive ways to skirt disaster!

Ahhhh, but it's the best way to learn. If someone just told you that sex is great and ends like you wouldn't believe, and you just said duhhh o.k. and did'nt do it for yourself, look at what you'd be missing.

Seriously though it's the best way to learn, My Mom and Dad tried to run my life at 17-18 sayin you can't do this you can't do that, but damn I sure had fun doing it anyway, some lessons were learned for sure, but I 'm sure I learned some shit that they might have forgot to tell me too.

Not a stupid mistake, just a lesson learned
