View Full Version : Is it time to spice up The Hunt?

Although I haven't been able to post many hunt pics for the last couple of months because my snake still has it's rear end sprawled all over the garage floor (it's nearly there!) - I think the Hunt is starting to get a little, well.... old - some of the latest catagories are just plain lame, offering very little originality or challenge to collect the pics, and there doesn't seem to be a point to it other than simply gathering a few member points. Too many people are just hitting the vote buttons to get points, and not even looking at the pics (this is evident by the number of obviously insufficient claims that get though easily).
Now don't get me wrong, I think the hunt is a great idea - in fact, it is probably the single best idea to stimulate participation amongst an enthusiast community ever concieved! - but after running for a few months, it seems to be missing something?
As time goes by, it will be harder to come up with new catagories that are fun and challenging, so newbies will still have fun chasing the hunt, but older hands will grow tired of it.
So perhaps it's time to consider improvements to the format? Perhaps changing it so that it becomes a monthly event with a beginning and end and a finite number of catagories, instead of the perpetual way it is now? Maybe something like a new hunt each month, that has a set number of catagories, and a time limit to get them posted by - you would still get points for each catagory, points for voting, and maybe bonus points for getting all the catagories complete within the time limit?
I also think that the voting rules need to be tightened a little somehow to make it harder to get insufficient pics approved - I'm not sure how to do this - perhaps it's simply a matter of spelling out the title/requirements a little clearer? I do think it's important that members vote and get points for doing so, as it is a way to ensure that everyone sees the hunt pics that people have spent the time to take. Maybe something like if a certain percentage of decline votes are posted - say 30% - then it gets flagged for final approval or denial by a moderator - or something like that?
Another possible idea to spice it up might be to have a "best hunt pics of the month" - maybe add a button under each hunt pic that says something like "nominate for hunt pic of the month" - then for the following month, the pic with the most nominations, or top 5 or 10, pics could be on display (selected from the main Hunt page where the rules and latest events are) and the best pic gets some bonus points.
Anyway, just food for thought and discussion, and maybe if others also feel that the hunt needs a change of pace, then we can improve it and keep it fun :)
(And sorry J, I hope this doesn't result in too much extra work for you?)

i think the monthly thing would be good, break it into a monthly thing with like 5-10 hunts and if you get them all done then you get bonus points and leave the hard or really rare ones like statue of liberty open all the time, i know that i like doing the hunts but after work i am ready to just kick back, if there is a time set to turn em in, more motivation to get off my lazy ass, good suggestion in my opinion!!
Im liking the sound of this.... Im not really in favor of removing what we have.. but maybe release OZs idea as a new feature. I can definately write the interface for this... And we can even have a theme or smething that MUST be in every hunt claim... Kinda like this...
Monthly Hunt Challenge August 01 - Sept 01 - Your Left Front Tire.
Now.. all of the hunt claims in this monthly challnge MUST involve your Left Front tire. This way we can reuse some of the claim items because they might have been taken at the wrong angle.
and..
OZ would you be interested in managing this new feature? I can give you admin access to the interface that will be written to manage it. Meaning.. start the new monthly challenges... and pick the items... id say about 20.. and of course a theme. if you like that idea. Let me know! if not .. someone volunteer!

5 or 10 might not be enough for a whole month - perhaps 20 would be a better number?
Hey J, I would love to help out with this, but the timing is real bad - I've just kicked off a new business, and after this weekend I am not going to have time to scratch myself for the next few months at least, so I'd hate to commit to something then not be able to do it justice. If you really get stuck for a volunteer then let me know, but hopefully someone with more time available right now can step up?
What do we call the new feature?

what about doing something for the member who goes above and beyond?? for example if the challenge is to get a pic with girls washing the pony and someone gets a pic with like 40 females (more than any other submitter) that person gets extra props. make it a challenge to be creative.

I really like the idea of the Claim of the month. :beerchug: Maybe there could be a button to click on to nominate that particular claim... of course one should not be able to nominate their own shots....
Overall I am liking all of these ideas, can't wait to see where this goes. (I will not be able to participate in the Hunt for a while, I am going on active duty in a week. The sandbox in the east calls.)
But hey, when I get home, the list will be so much more vast on the claims that I can get. It seems to have gotten a little thin for me....:D

OK! I am really liking where this conversation is going but, what do you think about opening up the Hunt that already exists to an indefinate amount of submissions? Don't add any more items to it, but the ones that are there are fun to do!
With the membership growing as fast as it is, these are great for people coming in to go have a good time with. And, it makes you feel like part of the whole Gotstang adventure!
Just going forward, only put up new Hunts on a monthly basis.
What do you think?

Wow I am getting really excited with all this talk!
I can't wait to see the final product!
Incase yall havent seen I Upped the claim count on the current hunt items to 100. The Ultimate hunt is completed.. im just running through some final testing shit.., This will go live August 1st.
The Ultimate hunt is a bit different then our orginal hunt idea. Here, you have a timelimit and a theme. All of the hunt items must be claimed within that month, with the theme involved in every picture you shoot. This should help reduce the amount of people using duplicate pictures, and to make people go out there and actually do the hunt each month. (an example, lets say the Theme was 'car keys'. This means that the 'car keys' have to be in all of the pictures you take. Maybe on the ground, or a person holding them or on the hood. I hope you get the idea.)
RULES
* You must upload 2 different angled images on each claim item you submit
* You will not receive the points on the claim until 30 people verify it
* No multiple claims per item
* YOU RECEIVE 1 RANK POINT FOR EACH CLAIMED ITEM YOU VERIFY AS REAL OR FAKE
* The THEME must be incorporated into EACH Angled Picture.
* The first person to submit ALL claims successfully receives an additional 500 points.
* Everyone else who submits ALL claims successfully receives an additional 250 points.

I have been checking out the hunt, and while the contest is a cool idea, people are either stupid, can't read or just work to get around the rules. I see to many posts of the same image twice or the photos have nothing to do with the actual request. The worst part are the morons voting them as real rather than fakes. If the contest rules are not inforced then why play? If someone posts some photos that don't within the claim request the opposite award should apply. Anyone caught cheating will have that many points pulled from them. If you can track who has voted for what, then those that voted real for something obviously is not with the claim request should get a double penalty.
People cheating takes the fun out of it.

At least 85% of the HUNT posts are done incorrectly, or done with intent to get around the rules with what are suppose to be humorous photos. People need to read the claim and then take the pictures correctly.
