Hey, quick question, is this normal? I have a 2002 GT, whenever I go high in first gear (or even just past 2.5-3k RPM's) then left off the gas it makes this whinning noise, high pitched then fades out as you slow down. Kind of like when you reverse really fast (your car makes that whinning noise, then as you let off the gas and let it roll it gets lower and lower) almost the same sound. It doesnt make this in any other gear. Just wondering, because its a little annoying and I dont remember my 96' GT doing that. Any of you experience the same? Im sure Im slow and its something simple, like a fluid change, but just wondering, thanks!

no, if it's exactley like the reverse sound I don't think it's good, do you have aftermarket gears installed or anything like that?

No, I just bought it in February, its bone stock. I want to take it to the dealer, as I still have the warranty, if its a problem. But I just want to know what it is specifically, if anyone has any ideas. Thanks!

my 02 V6 does it and so does my moms 96....its not as high pitched as reverse of course but if you take it up to around 2500-3000+ it will make it....Meaning if you accelerate really fast then left off the throttle and cost you will hear a "wheew wheeww wheewwww" but it goes away when you get off the gas....My experience with most mustangs is that First has always done that in any car I've driven including the GT's....First is just not a driving gear and no other gears do it on mine either...
My 02 has done it since I drove it home brand new after picking it up when it arrived in OCT 2001

Thanks, I appreciate your input! Yeah, its not as loud as reverse, but thats the closest sound I could think of. Thanks again!

oh okay, i thought you were saying it was as bad as reverse, might not hurt since you have a warrenty to have it checked out at a dealership just for fun

just put some nice exhaust on it...you wont hear nothing! :)
check your starter, it might be coming lose, it makes a whining noise when they start coming lose or go bad sometimes.

it's your diff.
more specificly, it's the inner bearings in your diff.
Might be a good time to upgrade your gears too...
go to www.mustangtuning .com and pick up a set of their Motive Performance Plus gears (I'd go with 4.10)
http://www.mustangtuning.com/mopepl4ge.html
make sure to pick up the Master Bearing Kit (because this is what's going to make it silent)
http://www.mustangtuning.com/rearendrebuild.html
My 99 GT had the same problem at about 60,000 miles, we changes the wheel bearings, and that did nothing... so i knew it was the inner axel bearings.
that will solve your problem (PM sent to ya cause this thread is old)
