View Full Version : What does everyone do for a living??

I thought it'd be cool to know what people did for a living, so if you ever had a question in their particular field, maybe you could get some expert advice...
So I'll start it... I work for Ford Motor Co. at Cleveland Engine Plants (Home of the now extinct 5.0)... we now build engines for the Taurus, Escape, Freestyle, Five Hundred, Mazda Tribute, Mazda 6, Mazda MPV, Lincoln LS-6, Jaguar X-Type,and the Jag S-Type 3.0.. So in other words, I build engines. Thanks to all of you for buying Ford products and not the jap-crap that has become so nauseatingly :drool2: (is that a word?) popular! Buy American!!
:thanks:

I'm a Systems Administrator for the Air Force (Contractor). My main job is Systems Management Server. I patch all the workstations on base for any vulnerabilities. I also do threat mitigation. I also build servers, patch them, and secure them before deploying them into the enterprise environment.
I am also the somewhat "Go To" guy for when a workstation does something weird. I am also a tester for new applications, testing them before deploying them via SMS.

When ford can make an engine that makes decent power for it's size then I'll have respect for their engines. They did a lot right with the 03 cobra but they had to use a blower to get things done. And anyone can slap a set of forged pistons and rods in an engine, call it a day and watch the community make crazy power with it (like toyota and the supra). I still love the cobra to death but I just wished they could have made that power N/A you know? Like how chevy has no problems doing this for the last 20 years. I know ford could have done it. They have the technology, skill and $$.
Don't take this personal. You don't design them; you build them. It's not your fault. I just wished that ford wouldn't be so conservative with their "muscle car". It makes me sad seeing Camaros with just a cam be able to smoke a supercharged mustang or cobra. :(
Now look at this Jap crap for a minute. Why does the 2.0L 4 cylinder under my hood have the same HP as the 4.6L V8 under my 97 GT's hood :hmmm:
And the guys who play the "oh but look what happens when you supercharge and build up the stang engine". That's nice but a entry level single turbo kit for the S2K's and RSX-S's usually net about 300~330 to the wheels. Forging the bottom end and porting the heads really only limits the power output to the size of the turbo but there is a guy in Birmingham with an orange S2K fully built engine that has over 600 rwhp on pump gas that he's been driving every day for almost 2 years with not a single problem.
They'll never match the torque output, which is a given, but love them or hate them, when the engines are half the size and the cars can match the HP and 1/4 times of the V8 counterparts, it leaves most people in disbelief.
I can only think of a small handfull of stangs with that power and every one of them has problems keeping it runnign well.
All the quibbles aside, I think that Ford's new GT supercar is the 2nd most amazing machine on the planet. (Ferrari's F430 takes the cake.) And I'd kill just to drool on either one. :drool2:
Oh...I almost forgot, I'm a (according to my job description) a Computer programmer level III. Oddly enough, I don't do any programming at all. I'm what one would call "help desk".

Why is it okay for a JAP CRAP car owner to put a "entry level single turbo kit" on his car, but the Stang owner can't?? It all comes down to AMERICAN PRIDE, and you'll see how it even effects you when they keep closing down American automobile plants... It will eventually trickle down and I hope you wise up soon... When they close a plant, it's hard on the economy in that community, small businesses shut down, and people don't have money to spend...
And I don't know where you got your info, there are plenty of dependable Stangs on the roads that will tear up your foreign junk...

First of, my topic-related response...
I've worked in the software industry for the past 8 years. I currently reside in Redmond, WA, so all you geeks out there could guess who I've worked for (and I did for about 3 years)... It was great, but now I've moved on and I'm currently a Support/Implementation Engineer for a security software company (mostly biometrics, both physical and logical access).
Now for my response to FRPC...
I won't argue that on a "per liter" basis, most Ford engines don't produce as much "power", but if you look at the engine's torque curves (torque is really what matters, HP only comes from better breathing, torque shows the real strengths of an engine), they have among the smoothest and widest in the auto industry.
You mention Chevy, but fail to mention that Chevy's "competing engines" are 5.7+ liters. The Mustang has always been targetted as a fast, economical pony car (damn, you even carry the name to prove it). If you slap a 5.7L engine, you're doing a few things to damage that goal... First of, you're building a more expensive engine, relatively speaking. Second, you're giving the buying audience a vehicle with a worse gas mileage. (not that the '03/'04 Cobras have amazing mileage..The worst gas mileage of any car I've owned).
You say S2000 and RSX-S's make 330 HP at the wheels with turbo kits... Let me tell you, I've been in the import scene for many years now and happen to know people with S2000's and RSX-S, and 330 HP at the wheels is not necessarily what I would consider reliable on those cars unless you dump an extra few grand on building up the engine. Trust me on this one, I've seen them reach their limits first hand. :)
Now, let's go back and revisit that magic number called Torque... You've got a 4.6L SOHC engine currently producing over 300 lbs-ft of torque (99+ Mustang GT's), and a pretty linear curve let me tell ya... Then you've got all of this rice-rockets (I've owned a few, including 3S-GTE, a 2ZZ-GE, and 4G63T powered ones...if you really know your stuff, you'll know what engines I'm talking about)... Let's study the 2ZZ-GE, since it's the closest to your RSX-S/S2000 in terms of technology...
What is it that makes these small displacement engines produce over 100 HP per liter ? Definitely not the internals, as those are good for maybe 130, eh, let's give it 150 lbs-ft of torque... It's the heads containing cams capable of variable valve timing and lift. Like I said earlier, better breathing. Does it make the engine stronger? No.
A Ferrari F430? Get real, you're comparing a 5 star hotel for which you pay 6000 a night with hotels people like you and I would normally stay at, which could vary from 35 ~ 400 a night. That shouldnt' even been brought up.
Now, let's talk about another area you failed to mention. Bang-for-the-buck...
'04 Cobra = $35k
'04 Z06 = $55k
'96 Supra TT = $55 ~ $60k (back then)
Now, considering the Supra TT in stock form is a mid 13 second car, 0 to 60 times in the mid 5 seconds, and stock handling is good but not superb (I've driven quite a few Supras), which of the above vehicles, when purchased brand new, do you consider the best bang for the buck?
IMO, the Z06, but can I afford a 55k car? Heck no.. So my second choice is the Cobra, which means that Ford/SVT achieved their goal of prodiving a heck of a car for a VERY reasonable price.
That's what Ford's goal has been all these years. Their quality might not be the best, but then again I can tell you of quite a few people I know who haven't been too happy with the quality of their 50k+ BMW M3's.
The import scene can be compared in a sense with how people have been, for years, sold on "Clock Speed" for computer processors. Current mass-market Intel and AMD processors of the same "clock speed" rating as, say, a PPC G5 processor, are slower in overall performance because of the way they actually handle data. But the Intel marketing gurus knew to emphasize clock speed as the "speed of your computer!"... Very similar to how Jap sports cars are marketted using the HP rating... You get the picture.
Anyways, if you want to compare current technology with old technology, then we could go on and on about the Muscle car era... But I don't think that'll be necessary, because if you examine the current trend, we're headed back in that direction anyways...
People are simply realizing that in the end, there is no replacement for displacement.

And by the way, isn't this a MUSTANG WEBSITE???????????????
My "foreign junk" will be on the road long after yours is in the junk yard. We used to own an acura legend that had 198K miles on it. All it had changed was the timing belt and the fluids. My MUSTANG, yes I owned a mustang and will own a future mustang(s), but at 80K miles, everything on the car was falling apart. I was wasting money on high insurance and higher repair bills.
I used to laugh at people when they said their stangs were tearing up. I said it would never happen since mine had been so reliable before and since I took very good care of the car I assumed it would last many days more. Not so. :(
You know, I want one of the 05's so badly. I LOVE the way the old shelby GT350 and 500's look. It's my ultimate dream car to build when I get older. When I saw the 05's for the first time, my jaw was hanging wide open but I didn't get one. I could have as the GT's go for just a tad more than the RSX but I didn't get it for 2 reasons - Insurance cost and the fact that it's a brand new first run production ford vehicle. There are bound to be problems. I don't want to be one of the first buyer "guinea pigs" to have the bad luck to discover what ford screwed up.
And I never said the stang owner couldn't turbo his/her car. I was just pointing out that when the stang owner puts a blower or turbo on his car, he or she usually nets about 400~450 hp which is the threshold of the internals. I was saying that it still just doesn't look right for an enigne less than half the size to make nearly the same power and run the same 1/4 mile times.
Nearly every mustang owner I've talked to about this agrees that if you step back and realize what honda, mazda, nissan and even chevy are doing with their engines seemingly using them to their potential and then looking at Ford's engines. It feels like you're getting screwed. I know I sure as hell felt that way. But one thing you AND I mustang owners can be proud of is the looks.
I'm not trying to bash american automobiles or ford or even the mustang in particular. I'm just pissed because it seems like ford just can't get it right. They have so much potential but it seems like they're just not doing anthing about it.

I highly doubt your Assyoura will be on the road longer than my Mustang. I've seen 5.0L Mustangs with hundreds of thousands of miles... Hell, I had a 4-cylinder Ranger with more miles than the Acura Legend you "used to have".
And By the way, if you haven't noticed, FORD OWNS MAZDA, and FORD PLANTS BUILD THEIR ENGINES...
I've said enough here, we're getting way off the topic, but if you want this country's economy to keep dwindling, keep buying the foreign cars...

:thanks:
