Hey everybody, been lurking some since I found your sight. I wanted to tell you it's nice to see a place for stang folks to get together and exchange ideas and info.
I do have a question for ya though. I have a black on black 85 GT convertible and it's been parked in my garage for about 10 years due to life getting in the way. It's pretty much original except for the stereo and a kill switch I installed.
It has 63K original miles on it and the same top it came with. I don't have any pictures uploaded as of yet but I will.
My question is, would you leave it as is and just drive it, or would you do some upgrades and if so what?
I've seen some of the cars on here and they are amazing. Nice work all around.
Thanks,
Hi chep, welcome to GS!
I picked up an 88 GT, speed density setup, stock as hell... just added rims and exhaust. I am not sure I am going to do more to it then that.
Of course we do have a few other stangs to play around with...
I would always advise some type of personalization... maybe do dress up items, minor things like CAI and Exhaust...

Welcome to GS. Even if you don't want to do a lot of mods, Fox bodies drive much nicer with subframe connectors and a strut tower brace. They will really stiffen up the car and allow the suspension to work correctly. The strut tower brace takes the shake out of the front end under braking and eleminates a lot of squeeks and rattles those old cars have.

well I would say if everything is still in pretty good condition, then do some slight mods to it and try and keep it as stock as possible. At least get rid of the stock air intake and put on a good one.

A 408 with a 88mm turbo would be nice. lol Seriously it all depends on what you want to do with the car. I would do some small things as J said, for personalization. You know, make it yours. Its an 85(Which was my first stang as well), so I assume it still has the 10 hole wheels. That would be my first change. A shifter if its a T-5, or shift kit if its an AOD. Its carbed too. So that makes some engine mods easy and cheap as well. If you want more power. When you start that, you need to know where you want to end up. So you dont end up buying stuff more than once.

I consider these mandatory upgrades for any stang even to just drive it:
RIMS, 17" (16" is passable, check out mine has 16")
EXHAUST, an 85 may really need it!
CLAY BAR, POLISH AND WAX
STEREO HEAD UNIT; debatable...mine hasn't been hooked up for a few years cause my exhaust sounds so good i never bothered to hook it back up!
