Trouble understanding rankings

I may be a total noob, but I don't understand how the car ranking works. I understand what the different color horses mean (ty for the help page) but I'm not entirely sure HOW I get rank points. My first thought is they come from people ranking my ride - so if I have 100 points, that could be from 10 people ranking me 10. Have I got it right? Could it also be from 20 people ranking me 5? If so, these two rides with 100 points aren't really the same if more people rank one lower to achieve the same total points.

You are correct, that is why some people like to go by the Average Car Rank...

20 people ranking 5 = 10 people ranking 10

Member ranks are given to you by doing various features on the site... Faceoffs, Tournaments, Hunts, Car show, voting... etc.
